What is the difference between Data Connection and Connection Data Source?

The Spotfire documentation states:

A data connection is used when you are analyzing massive amounts of data and you need to keep the underlying data in the database (in-db) rather than bringing it into Spotfire's internal data engine...

and:

A connection data source is an important part of a data connection.

Neither definition actually a definition. One describes when you'd use a DC, and the other, well, you be the judge. In practice, they look to be the same - all the dialogs are similar. Can someone provide good, correct, definitions of these and how they are similar / how they differ?

I am continually amazed at how poor the Spotfire documentation really is - definitions are sketchy and often circular.

thanks,

JP
